Ageing crook last link to $700m art heist

This undated photograph released by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum shows the painting "Chez Tortoni" by Manet, which was one of more than a dozen works of art burglars stole during a 1990 heist in Boston. It remains the most tantalizing art heist mystery in the world. In the early hours of March 18, 1990, two thieves walked into Boston's elegant Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum disguised as police officers and bound and gagged two guards using handcuffs and duct tape. For the next 81 minutes, they sauntered around the ornate galleries, removing masterworks including those by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Degas and Manet, cutting some of the largest pieces from their frames. Now, 20 years later, investigators are making a renewed push to recover the paintings. (AP Photo/Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum) NO SALES

Duke slaughters family over inheritance

ONE TIME WEB USE ONLY - FEE APPLIES FOR REUSE - Pic shows: An Austrian duke has been arrested for gunning down three family members with a shotgun in their castle during an alleged row over inheritance. Duke Tono Goess, the owner of Bockfliess Castle in the Austrian state of Lower Austria, was arrested by police officers on suspicion of murdering his family members. According to local media, the 54-year-old Austrian duke confessed to cops that he killed his 92-year-old father Johannes Ulrich, his 87-year-old stepmother Margherita and his 52-year-old brother Ernst. The alleged murders happened around 2pm last Thursday in the castles office. According to the police, all victims were shot at close range. The police do not want to comment on Duke Tonos motive, citing the importance of ongoing investigations. However, town residents claim that the nobleman killed his brother in a dispute over family inheritance. Neighbours said that the once-wealthy Goess family is in financial dire straits and has had to sell off property. Father Johannes Ulrich Goess reportedly burdened his sons with the financial problems, which resulted in repeated fights between Duke Tono and his brother Ernst. According to local media, Duke Tono also had a deep hatred for his father and stepmother since childhood. A neighbour said: "We can hardly believe it. Everyone thought that they had a lot of money and no problems, but it turned out that they have some financial issues." However, locals also said that Duke Tono was a friendly and helpful person who always behaved respectfully towards the townsfolk. Investigators are now trying to recreate what played out in Bockfliess Castle in the final hours before the murders. Duke Tono was found to be online at 2.44am, sharing a video on social media about a neurosurgeon dancing with his patients. The Austrian duke frequently used social media to discuss politics and had showed a recent interest in the yellow vests movement in France and vouched his support for Austrian Chancellor

Anton von Goëss shot his father, stepmother and brother in their castle. A row over money or a medical condition may be behind the tragedy.

Eric Walker, 56, was overjoyed when he scratched the ticket and discovered he had won the jackpot prize on the lotto's Pharaoh's Fortune game. But his delight turned to heartbreak when Camelot refused to pay out after seeing a picture of the card and claiming it's doctored. Outraged Eric, a father of four from Sheffield, South Yorks, denies tampering with the £3 ticket and says it's "obvious" he's won "fair and square". Camelot Group, which is carrying out an investigation, claim it appears a letter F on the card has been changed to an E to turn it into a winning ticket. Eric, who is unemployed and has four children aged between 14 months and nine-years-old, says the money would be "life changing". Eric's card shows that he uncovered three pharaoh symbols on squares D1, E5 and A5, however, the E5 code appears to have been doctored.
